AI IN ACCOUNTING

The Tools Reshaping the Profession

AI adoption in accounting has moved well past the hype stage. Globally, 92% of accounting professionals are now using AI, and the shift is being felt directly in day-to-day firm operations. For U.S. Accounting firms, the question is no longer whether to adopt AI, but which tools actually move the needle.

Why It Matters Now

Firms that invest in AI training are saving employees up to 7 weeks a year, a staggering efficiency gain in an industry facing chronic staffing shortages and compressed busy seasons. 63% of accounting professionals now believe a firm’s value drops if it doesn’t use AI, and 91% believe younger talent is more likely to join firms that actively use AI. For CPAs competing for both clients and staff, this is becoming a real differentiator.

Where AI Is Actually Being Used

The biggest use case isn’t flashy automation, it’s communication. 77% of accountants use AI for communication tasks, ahead of meeting transcription (59%) and research or problem-solving (58%). Beyond that, firms are leaning on AI for:

  • Data extraction & bookkeeping— pulling structured data from invoices, receipts, and bank statements
  • Reconciliations & reporting— matching transactions and flagging discrepancies automatically
  • Forecasting & predictive analytics— spotting risk patterns across large datasets
  • Client updates & inbox management— drafting and summarizing client communications

Tools Worth Knowing

A few platforms stand out for accounting-specific use:

  • Vic.ai– automates invoice processing, coding, and compliance checks; strong for high-volume AP workflows
  • Docyt– bundles bookkeeping automation with AI-generated financial reports and receipt extraction
  • Karbon AI– embeds AI directly into practice management, summarizing emails, client timelines, and work items
  • Rows AI / Receipt-AI– lighter-weight tools for data cleanup and receipt digitization

AI isn’t a replacement for professional judgment. Firms report that 83% of accounting professionals are concerned about data security when evaluating AI tools, and errors or hallucinations remain a real risk if outputs aren’t reviewed. The firms seeing the biggest returns are the ones pairing new tools with clear AI policies and structured staff training– not just plugging in software and hoping for the best.

Bottom Line for accountants: AI won’t replace accountants, but accountants who use AI well are pulling ahead. The firms winning right now are the ones treating tool selection and staff training as seriously as they treat tax law updates.
